A CHARACTER IN ANOTHER'S STORY

James Ng August 10, 2019

Nestled on the island of Penang, Georgetown is a town like no other. It's a place where the rich tapestry of Thai, Malaysian, and Indian cultures seamlessly blend, giving birth to a unique and captivating fusion of traditions. But this town's incredible story isn't just etched into its buildings and streets; it's told through the incredible art that adorns its walls.

The art of Georgetown, in many ways, mirrors this amalgamation. Ernest Zacharevic, a gifted artist, has played a pivotal role in this narrative. His art serves as an invitation for people from all walks of life and corners of the world to join in and add their own brushstrokes to the canvas of Georgetown's identity. Ernest Zacharevic's art installations are not just picturesque, but also interactive. He has created a series of incomplete stories across the town, and in each piece, there is an opportunity for visitors to step in and shape their own narrative.

Georgetown's story is, much like these installations, a work in progress, and it invites all who visit to participate in its creation. This concept is more than just "Instagramable" art; it's a reflection of the town's evolving identity. The amalgamation of cultures in Georgetown has given rise to a new culture, one that doesn't solely belong to any one ethnicity but to all who call this place home and to those who visit. The town doesn't demand conformity; instead, it encourages diversity and the celebration of differences. This is beautifully exemplified by Zacharevic's art, which invites everyone, regardless of their background, to engage with and contribute to Georgetown's ever-evolving narrative.

OFF THE PATH - PARIS

James Ng May 10, 2019

A city full of culture and beauty, built on a style that has etched itself into the art textbooks of the western world. Traversing the cobblestone paths and alley ways can be a challenge, as things can start to look the same. But that’s the fun in it. The city is never designed in the way of how people actually walk through the city. People are spontaneous and indecisive, they go off the path and find which way works best for them. That alleyway there might be a shortcut to where you think you want to go but it might lead you down a street where you try the most amazing gelato you’ve ever had. Maybe you’ll find an restaurant and lock eyes with what is now your current significant other, this is the city of love after all. But lets be real, this isn’t the movies but… it could happen just because you choose to go down that alleyway in Paris.

A MODERN SHRINE

James Ng October 14, 2018

In today's world, iconic landmarks have taken on a new role. They serve as modern-day shrines, guiding travelers from all corners of the globe on a quest for enlightenment and a deeper understanding of the cultures they represent. These attractions, while not religious in nature, have become the contemporary pilgrim's dream, a journey that transcends borders and seeks to reveal the essence of a place.

The Louvre, one of the world's most celebrated museums, is no stranger to the footsteps of tourists. Its iconic glass pyramid and grandiose architecture have been captured in countless photos and paintings. However, it wasn't until I visited on a rainy day, when the ground was drenched and the crowds had dissipated, that I truly grasped the significance of this landmark. It became a beacon of enlightenment, guiding me towards a deeper understanding of art, history, and culture.

In centuries past, pilgrimages were primarily religious in nature, with individuals journeying to sacred sites seeking spiritual awakening. In our modern world, the concept of pilgrimage has evolved. Tourists now traverse countries and continents to witness the marvels of human achievement, the architectural wonders, and the artistic masterpieces that signify a culture's unique identity. These modern shrines are not linked to any deity, but they do offer a form of cultural and intellectual enlightenment. The pilgrimage to iconic attractions is about more than just checking off a list of must-see sights; it's a quest for understanding.

THE NATURAL BOUNDARY

James Ng August 20, 2018

2:00 AM, The beginning of the day for many. For the locals, starting the preparation for travelers to experience the beauties of their country. For travelers, the struggle to wake up on time for that bus to take you to your destination.

4:00 AM, Beginning of the trek up Mt. Batur for sunrise, pitch black with nothing but a flashlight and a local guide to help you through it.

6:30 AM Reached the peak and another hour until the sun rises. A group of friends who have known one another for a day watch shooting stars and share stories of their adventures. While they wait in the cold hours of the morning to see the the darkness slowly fade and stars disappear from their sights and the sun rising over the horizon. A dance in the sky of natural elements moving in perfect harmony, as we sit and watch.

The journey prompted contemplation about the role of boundaries – are they obstacles to conquer or natural elements that foster connections? Are they thresholds where one state transforms into another? Here, the boundary is where strangers evolve into friends and night transitions into morning.

I began to reflect on my career in architecture and the profound impact design has on our world. It's essential to perceive architecture not as a rigid division between indoor and outdoor but as an entity that harmoniously coexists within the natural environment. The built environment is in a constant state of flux, and as designers, we must grasp the compatibility and interconnectedness between structures and the natural boundaries they inhabit. It's the delicate balance between the man-made and the pre-existing natural world that architects must comprehend to shape the future of design.

BUILT IN HUMILITY

James Ng August 10, 2018

Is it a matter of belief? Tradition? Forgiveness? In the presence of something so natural, so unfiltered, so immensely potent and potentially devastating, it becomes nearly impossible not to ponder the existence of a higher, otherworldly force capable of altering the course of human lives in the blink of an eye. It's as if there's a transient respite, a momentary pause, in the face of this immense and unpredictable entity.

But what prompts the construction of shrines in places of such unparalleled beauty and power? Is it to draw closer to what existed long before our time and will endure long after we are gone? Or does it serve to humble those who need to grasp that the world extends beyond their individual existence? On a day like this, I couldn't help but view it as an opportunity for personal reflection within the context of a grander narrative, whatever that may be. And of course, to not to trip into this highly active volcano.

DISAPPEARING EDGE

James Ng June 11, 2018

Tofino, affectionately known as "Tough City," isn't named for its battered streets, instead, it draws its moniker from the unyielding wilderness that surrounds it and the indomitable strength of its ocean shores. To me, it's nothing short of a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, a charming small town where the generosity of a kind stranger is as common as the rainfall. I experienced this firsthand when a fellow traveler offered me a lift during a downpour, realizing my hike back to town had been overly ambitious.

Venturing beyond the town's limits, I was encouraged to explore the famed Canadian beaches, and people weren't exaggerating; they are indeed among the most beautiful in the country. The sight of the ocean stretching infinitely into the sky leaves you in a perpetual state of wonder. Tofino is, without a doubt, a surfer's haven, though I, regrettably, lack those particular skills. I can only imagine that there's no better place to catch the perfect wave than on a Tofino Beach.

While photographing the crashing waves along Tofino's rocky shores, I had the pleasure of meeting a local photographer who had called this place home for over four decades. We whiled away the hours as we waited for the sun to dip below the horizon. He shared stories of his adventures, recounting one particular time where he and his friends drove a car along the shoreline, navigating from one beach to another across town. Their vantage point on a hill as they awaited the sunset was the climax of their journey, yet the ocean had other plans. As the sun dipped below the horizon, their car was consumed by the relentless tide. That once-drivable shore is now lost to the sea, a testament to the ever-changing landscape of Tofino.

In the end, perhaps Tofino truly earns its "Tough City" title, not for its resilience in the face of adversity, but for its refusal to remain stagnant in the presence of the unyielding natural forces that shape its existence.

ALLEY OOP

James Ng March 5, 2018

Alleyways often bear the stigma of being perilous, shadowy passages, best avoided. In a world where urban space is increasingly at a premium and skyscrapers loom ever higher, sometimes alienating those at street level, one must question whether cities should make the most of every available inch for communal use. Alley Oop, a designed by HCMA Architecture + Design, stands as a testament to the untapped potential of these neglected urban spaces.

During my time in Vancouver, Alley Oop transformed into a repository of cherished memories, from impromptu photo shoots to lively summer "public discos." It serves as an illuminating example of a city's willingness to invite its inhabitants into spaces that they might otherwise shun.

For a designer, accepting that you cannot dictate precisely how a space will be used by its users is a given. People are inherently capricious and hard to predict. The most effective designs provide the flexibility for multiple functions, granting individuals the autonomy to determine how they interact with that space.
