A MODERN SHRINE

James Ng October 14, 2018

In today's world, iconic landmarks have taken on a new role. They serve as modern-day shrines, guiding travelers from all corners of the globe on a quest for enlightenment and a deeper understanding of the cultures they represent. These attractions, while not religious in nature, have become the contemporary pilgrim's dream, a journey that transcends borders and seeks to reveal the essence of a place.

The Louvre, one of the world's most celebrated museums, is no stranger to the footsteps of tourists. Its iconic glass pyramid and grandiose architecture have been captured in countless photos and paintings. However, it wasn't until I visited on a rainy day, when the ground was drenched and the crowds had dissipated, that I truly grasped the significance of this landmark. It became a beacon of enlightenment, guiding me towards a deeper understanding of art, history, and culture.

In centuries past, pilgrimages were primarily religious in nature, with individuals journeying to sacred sites seeking spiritual awakening. In our modern world, the concept of pilgrimage has evolved. Tourists now traverse countries and continents to witness the marvels of human achievement, the architectural wonders, and the artistic masterpieces that signify a culture's unique identity. These modern shrines are not linked to any deity, but they do offer a form of cultural and intellectual enlightenment. The pilgrimage to iconic attractions is about more than just checking off a list of must-see sights; it's a quest for understanding.
