The treatment of nature within architecture drastically differs in Japan to the western world, treating design as a supplementary to nature where it is treated with the upmost respect and often as the main focus.
Through Carleton University, I was fortunate to spend a two week period traveling across the country from Tokyo to Nara to the art islands of Naoshima and Teshima. Our studio sought to absorb Japan’s culture and explore all aspects of the country from architecture to food.

Landscapes have a way of reminding you of how grand the world is, some as a monument to something bigger than one’s self, some untouched by human intervention or some as a boundary between the natural and built environment. While backpacking through South East Asia I had the pleasure of trekking out to some of the most beautiful locations in Indonesia, to capture conditions that can disappear within a moment.
Stories are often embedded within the nooks and carnies of the city. Finding the hidden spots in which you can spend hours in, being immersed in the textures and art around. Malaysia is an blend of so many cultures where often the next alley over can take on a whole new character.
